St Bartholomews Orchestra, amateur orchestra in South London St Bartholomews Orchestra, amateur orchestra in South London

Welcome to St Bart's...

... your friendly local orchestra

We are a friendly amateur orchestra and registered charity based in Streatham, South London. We are conducted by prize-winning conductors from the Royal Academy of Music, where many of our soloists come from too.

We enjoy playing from a wide repertoire, and perform 3 or 4 concerts a year, mainly in local concert venues, although past locations include Southwark and St George's Cathedrals, Arundel Castle, Croydon Clocktower and Fairfield Hall. We also take part in concerts with St Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir. We raise money for charity through our concerts, and have raised tens of thousands of pounds during the 40 years we've been established. During the last year we have played for charities in aid of those caught up in the Syrian conflict, the homeless at Christmas, the St John's Church Restoration Fund, and an education programme for the disadvantaged in Pakistan.

Members of the Orchestra took part in our neighbour St Bartholomew's Polyphony Choir's Christmas concert, playing the up-to-date arrangements of a number of well-known carols from Willcocks 5. The programme also included a lively rendering of 'Jingle Bells' in an arrangement by Mary Jane Lang, an American viola member of some years back, also an orchestration of Percy Fletcher's 'Ring out, wild bells', specially compiled by our past-Chairman Dr Bernard Jupp to accompany the Choir on this happy occasion. The concert raised just over £350 to help the disadvantaged of the parish.

We keep in touch so far as we can with former members, soloists and conductors, and Christmas greetings were received from Oscar Rubilar, Victor Jacob, Aya Kawabata, Florent de Bazelaire, Valentina Peleggi and Mary Jane Lang.
